Safety campaigns put the focus on bicyclists and pedestrians

A rising number of Virginians are shunning automobile use and are instead choosing to walk or ride their bicycles to get back and forth. This makes sense in several ways. It saves money and enhances physical fitness. In addition, it is good for the environment. However, that does not eliminate the risk.

Auto accidents are unfortunately common and people who are not protected by a vehicle of their own are vulnerable to catastrophic injuries and fatalities. The problem has grown so significantly in recent years that various campaigns have been initiated to promote safety. Despite that, people impacted by a crash should know what they can do to recover physically, personally and financially in the aftermath.

The numbers of pedestrian and bicycle accidents are troubling

Accident statistics were compiled and assessed by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. According to the numbers, pedestrians and bicyclists have been at greater risk in Virginia for the past several years. Between 2020 and 2021, pedestrian-automobile accidents spiked by 12.6%.

Injured pedestrians rose by 11.7% and pedestrian deaths by nearly 10%. The number of auto accidents overall rose by just over 12%. For bicyclists, the number of fatalities doubled from eight to 16 between 2020 and 2021. Lawmakers have considered this and are seeking solutions.

One state senator mentioned that law enforcement has been lacking to prevent known problems such as distracted driving even though there are laws in place designed to reduce its frequency. This was also evident in the statistics as distracted driving accidents were up by 11%. Even if there is greater vigilance from law enforcement, driver education is believed to help with showing drivers how exposed pedestrians and bicyclists are. This can enhance safety.

People whose lives were turned upside down by an auto accident should have help

With speeding drivers, drivers who are simply not watching the road, drunk or drugged drivers and other misbehaviors, it places pedestrians, bicyclists and others in jeopardy. Pedestrians and bicyclists are prone to broken bones, head injuries, spinal cord damage and long-term challenges. Fatalities exacerbate what the family left behind will face.

This will inevitably include medical costs, lost income and being unable to contribute to a family. Having assistance from professionals experienced in auto accidents can assess the case, accrue evidence and take the necessary steps to ensure people are covered for all they have lost.
